The organization emphasizes that all pets require access to food and water, even during harsh weather.

In addition to caring for pets at home, the community is encouraged to assist stray animals during cold snaps. Simple actions such as providing bedding or ensuring vehicle safety can prevent harm to wildlife and strays. By working together, residents can help these vulnerable animals find refuge.

Texas laws, including the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, dictate the responsibilities of pet owners regarding outdoor pets. Houston Petet advises that adequate shelter must be provided, along with necessary resources like food and water. Moreover, residents can report neglected animals to ensure their safety.

As temperatures drop in Houston, local nonprofit Houston Petet is taking measures to help ensure the safety of pets during extreme cold. In partnership with the city, they have organized dog house distributions and provided essential cold weather safety tips for pet owners. One vital message from Houston Petet is to bring pets inside whenever possible. For those unable to provide indoor shelter, there are guidelines to follow to ensure pets have adequate protection from the cold. During a recent doghouse distribution event at BARK, Houston Petet saw a significant turnout, showcasing the community's urgent need for assistance in keeping pets safe. Lisa Tian of Houston Petet emphasized that even small steps can make a big difference. She recommended checking outdoor pets for ice-related chemicals on their paws and encouraged using non-toxic antifreeze to prevent harm. Regarding stray pets, Houstonians are urged to leave warm bedding outside for strays and to check their cars before starting them, as animals may seek refuge there. Local organizations have also offered insulated boxes for feral cats, which can significantly improve their safety and warmth in freezing temperatures. Lastly, pet owners are reminded that following Texas’s Safe Outdoor Dogs Act is essential. This law outlines mandatory provisions for outdoor pets, including shelter and proper tethering regulations. If anyone suspects that animals are being neglected in the cold, they should reach out to the local shelters or animal control for help. Houston Petet's ongoing commitment to animal welfare underscores the importance of community action in protecting pets during severe weather conditions.
