In its first day, New York City's congestion pricing program has led to noticeably less traffic in the city. Observers reported that major routes, particularly approaching the Lincoln Tunnel, were emptier than usual. The question on everyone’s mind is whether this is a temporary anomaly due to today's snowfall or an indicator of longer-term changes in commuter behavior.
The introduction of the $9 congestion toll is making commuters rethink their options. Many drivers are considering alternative routes, such as the Holland Tunnel, to avoid the new fees. Some individuals have even chosen to forgo driving into the city altogether, leaning more towards public transportation in light of the increased costs associated with driving.
The main objective of the congestion pricing scheme is not only to ease traffic but also to raise funds for revitalizing New York's public transit. Experts note that the funds generated from this initiative will help modernize the old infrastructure, extend subway lines, and upgrade existing services. However, achieving these goals is expected to take a significant amount of time, with many anticipating a cultural shift in commuting habits ahead.
Less than 48 hours since the launch of New York's congestion pricing, it is still uncertain what has contributed to the noticeable decrease in traffic—either the new tolling system or the unexpected snowfall. Eyewitness News reporter Josh Einiger observed an eerily quiet 42nd and Ninth Avenue, a typically congested thoroughfare, during the evening rush. Some commuters are expressing willingness to pay the new $9 toll if it means a smoother commuting experience.MTA has been mismanaged for years. All you have to do is drive over bridges and ride the subways to see they’re falling apart. This is a $9 tax on all hardworking people. Why doesn’t the MTA go after people that don’t pay for the subway? That’s millions of dollars a year.
I drove in the congestion zone yesterday off-peak but I still dont see a charge on my E-Z Pass. Dont even think the things were on!
This is some BS. Restrict some streets to Buses and Taxies only within the CBD, thatll remove congestion if there is such a concern about it. Has worked on W 181st street.. MANDATE overnight deliveries for most companies. Get rid of a large portion of FHVs youve allowed to operate in this city, its insane that all those taxies, ubers, lyfts, revels can just FREELY operate within the CBD after passengers cover their congestion fee, which is a measly what $1.50-$2.00 and what? They can continue to clog up the zone? Remove this ridiculous burden on residents and people working in the area and businesses. WHY the hell do I have to pay $9 between 5am and 9pm to drive in 2 city blocks worth of street to park by my apartment and get off the street while the fing taxies and other FHVs get to freely roam the CBD for way less and their passengers cover their measly fees?! This is THIEVERY! F this cash grab!
Welcome to the way London and Europe deals with traffic jams. auto pricing via cameras and wait till there is a charge just for older polluting cars like in london
That the first one since Covid when everybody were forced to work at home zero offices available 😆
People from NJ, CT & other states stay in your states and stop complaining. Real New Yorkers dont really drive into Manhattan other than folks in Staten Island 😂
