Sounds like the mother was doing some kind of hands-free breastfeeding. Havent seen that before. Usually mothers sit down to breastfeed. I suppose it give them more control.
In this instance this tragedy occured in a sling. Generally speaking though, there is a lack of understanding amongst parents/the general public of infant physiology and the fact that they cannot maintain their own airway in certain positions. Chin to chest positioning, which causes positional asphyxiation, can occur in any device where a baby is partially upright without adequate head support. Young babies do not have adequate muscle tone to maintain an open airway and support their disproportionality large heads on their own when tilted. Babies have also died this way in car seats when they are out of their base, in baby bouncers and in positioning pillows. There are so many products marketed for infants which are unsafe and there is not enough understanding among consumers as to the risks they can pose.
Rip Jimmy ❤ but this country isnt going to do anything. There isnt even easy access knowledge regarding car seats. So baby carriers are least of the issues
My heart goes out to these parents. The fact they are using Jimmy’s memory to create awareness around this is so valuable to so many of us parents. It’s caused me to really consider how I’m wearing my sling and carrier and take a closer look. RIP to this baby x
